Following the Solway Sharks AGM some new changes have been introduced which will take the club forwards and open additional funding streams for the Solway Sharks.
The club adopted a new constitution which will mean that they are in a position to apply to become a registered charity. The application to the Scottish Charities Register (OSCR) will be submitted in the next few weeks and it is hoped that the club will become a charity sometime early in the 2022/23 season. As part of the application to become a charity the club have agreed to introduce a new structure which will include a board of 4 trustees who will oversee the strategic direction of the club who will be supported by a range of volunteers with specific remits to allow the smooth running of the functions of the club.
The trustees are volunteers who have been appointed for a period of 12 months in the first instance and they are;
Ian Bryden – Chairman
Raymond Boyd – Finance Director and Vice Chair
Andrea Stenton – Club Secretary
Andy Glen – General Manager
The head coach of the Sharks, Martin Grubb, will regularly attend the trustee meetings on an advisory capacity along with any other non voting member the trustees wish to invite.
Andy Glen steps into the General Manager role that was vacated by James Hutchison, who takes on a new role of Hockey consultant. James will continue to work closely with Martin and Andy in his new role and the club thanked him at the AGM for the work he has done over the past 12 months.
Andy has been a member of the board for the past 2 years and most fans will know him from Sharks TV which he set up when he joined the Sharks. He will continue to do the commentary on the TV channel as well as the role of GM. Speaking after the AGM Andy said “I am honoured to be asked take on the role of GM with the Sharks, I aim to support Martin to put the best team we can on the ice for the fans to enjoy and I want to see as many people as possible come to the Ice Bowl to support our team. The Sharks are a key part of our community in D&G, We have a wonderful group of volunteers who help every match and I want to continue to grow this aspect of our club too and work with local charities to have the Sharks reach out to everyone in the region. Martin is just the best Coach a club can have and he will continue to build the team and we are looking to go one step further than last year and do the clean sweep of trophies.”
Chairman Ian Bryden commented “These are exciting developments for Solway Sharks. By continuing to develop and strengthen the management of the club it will enable us to provide additional support to allow the team to achieve further success.”
Head coach Martin Grubb added “I am delighted to be able work alongside Andy as the GM of this club. He is someone who loves the club and will do a great job making sure we continue to set high standards and drive the club forward. I’m pleased we can both continue to have James on board also and utilise his skills and time on a more hockey specific role and the future looks bright for the club.”
Another addition to the volunteers that support the club is a new position of Commercial Manager. MJ White, supported by his partner Stacey Millan will undertake this role with the remit on securing more commercial income through sponsorships and corporate hospitality.
